This necessity issue was struck during the Chilean Revolution of 1859, when several opposition parties joined to demand reforms of the country’s constitution. The insurrection was led by revolutionary Pedro León Gallo from the city of Copiapó, where this coin was struck. The government of Manuel Montt put down the rebellion just a few months after it started.
