Extremely Rare Krannon Bronze

Sale: CNG 76, Lot: 390. Estimate $200.
Closing Date: Wednesday, 12 September 2007.
Sold For $400. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Krannon. 3rd century BC. Æ 20mm (2.12 g, 2h). Jugate heads right of horseman, wearing petasos, and horse / Bull butting right; KP[A] in exergue, NOINWN and trident above. Rogers 172a (incorrectly attributed to Atrax; see Demetriadi p. 48, n. 3 for correction), otherwise unpublished. Good VF, brown patina. Extremely rare.

The reverse type appears to relate this issue to Rogers 187-190, but the fact that all are the same size and weight suggest these were not contemporary issues. The obverse type and style, and the ethnic are closer to Rogers 202, of which the present issue would be an appropriate half-denomination.
