CAROLINGIANS. Lothaire I. As Emperor, 840-855. AR Denier (1.67 g, 12h). Dorestat mint. Struck circa 840-850. +IOTLIIVS IP INEPLT, cross pattée; pellet in each quarter / +DORESTLTVS MON, Temple; cross within. Coupland, Lothar 19; Depeyrot 419; M&G -; MEC 1, -; Haertle 50/824-5. Good VF, toned. Well struck for issue with full legends.

Haertle's hoard 50, "Der Schatzfund von Roermond (prov. Limburg) Niederlande," contained 6 examples of this exact type. In contrast to the struck dates assigned by Coupland, listed above, Haertle suggests a later dating of 845/50-855, based on the study of H.E. van Gelder, "De Karolingische muntslag te Duurstede," in JMP 48 (1961).
