VISIGOTHS, Gaul. Uncertain king. 417-507. AV Solidus (4.20 g, 6h). In the name of Valentinian III. Uncertain mint in northern Gaul. Struck circa 470-475. D N [PL]A VALENTINIAVS P F AVC, rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right; “flame” on shoulder / VICTOR-IA AVGGG, Valentinian standing facing, holding long cross in right hand, Victory on globe in left, his right foot on head of human-headed serpent; R-A//COMOB. Depeyrot, Solidi -; Reinhart, Münzen 51 var. (obv. legend); MEC 1, -; RIC X 3728 var. (same); Depeyrot 1 var. (Toulouse mint; same); Hunter, Byzantine -. Near EF, small die break on obverse, a couple minor peck marks. Struck from dies engraved with remarkable barbaric exuberance. Very rare.
