GERMANY, Straßburg (Stadt). AR Achtzig Kreuzer Klippe. Siege issue. Dated 1592. Coat-of-arms of Johann Georg of Brandenburg above those of both the bishop and civic arms of the city; 15 9Z across uper field, 80 in exergue; all within laurel wreath border / Blank. Brause-Mansfeld pl. XXV, 2; Engel & Lehr 448; Mailliet 1. In an NGC slab graded XF 40.


These issues were minted during the siege of Straßburg in 1592, when the city was under attack by French forces from the duchy of Lorraine. The city, located in the duchy of Elsass (Alsace), remained under constant threat from neighboring France. During the Thirty Years’ War, Alsace was overrun by a succession of invaders, and was eventually taken by France.
