In AD 197 the Parthian campaign of Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla culminated with the capitulation and capture of the Parthian capital, Ctesiphon. So important was this victory over Rome’s mortal enemy that Severus was granted the cognomen Parthicus Maximus the following year, and, over the next several years, issues, such as this coin were struck to commemorate the event.
