Superb Damaskos Tetradrachm
KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Tetradrachm (25mm, 17.25 g, 11h). Damaskos mint. Struck circa 330-320 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, forepart of ram right; below throne, two pellets above strut, ΔA and two pellets below. Price 3209. Superb EF, toned. Very rare with this configuration of control marks.
Price notes two examples of this type were found in the Demanhur hoard, but Newell’s description of the pellets below the strut places one above and one below the ΔA, not two below, as on this coin. Unfortunately, Newell did not illustrate either example in his plates, and Price’s reference an example on plate XXV of Newell, Reattribution is erroneous. Further, one of the two Demanhur coins was sold in Coin Galleries list II.6 (1961), no. A1091, but this item was not illustrated. None of this type has appeared in recent sales.
