CILICIA, Tarsos. 164-27 BC. Æ 24mm (7.05 g, 1h). Turreted head of Tyche right; monogram behind / Sandan standing right on horned, winged animal, within a pyramidal monument surmounted by an eagle; two monograms to left. Cf. SNG France 1307-9 (controls); cf. SNG Levante 933-8 (same). VF, black patina.

From the D. Alighieri Collection.

This coin shows many peculiarities as compared to most coins of this general type from Tarsos. For instance, the head of Tyche is normally veiled, but not always, and on those where she is not there is usually no monogram on the reverse. Likewise, the legend in the right field on the reverse normally is straight, but in this coin it is rounded to follow the edge of the coin.
