KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (4.21 g, 1h). ‘Amphipolis’ mint. Lifetime issue, struck under Antipater, circa 332-326 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Eagle standing right on thunderbolt; bow to right. Price -; Troxell, Studies, Group C (this symbol unlisted for drachms). VF, granular surfaces. Apparently unique.


The eagle drachms all have subsidiary symbols corresponding to contemporary tetradrachm issues at the ‘Amphipolis’ mint. The bow symbol is recorded on both tetradrachms and didrachms, but is previously unknown on drachms.
