KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 8.56 g 11), struck under Antigonos Monophthalmos, Babylon, circa 317-311. Head of Athena to right, wearing triple-crested Corinthian helmet adorned with a griffin rushing right on the bowl, pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, Η; to left below wing, monogram within wreath. Price 3707 var. (letter to left differently placed). Attractive, well struck and well centered. Good extremely fine.

The griffin on the bowl of Athena’s helmet is quite clear on this coin. It seems that sphinxes recorded by Price are mostly mistaken.
