(491.1) THESSALY, Oitaioi. Circa 350s BC. Æ Chalkous (14mm, 2.07 g, 3h). Lion’s head l., spear in its jaws / OIT above, ΑΩΝ below, hunting knife and spear to r. Valassiadis 11; BMC p. 37, pl. VII, 11; Weber 2882. Good Fine, dark brown patina, the surfaces a little rough and the obv. slightly off centre.

Acquired from Leu, through ASW, November 1978, for CHF 50.

This coin came with an old ticket of Julius Günzburger in Vienna, correctly identified and referenced, priced at 15 schillings. The Austrian schilling was created in 1924 and lasted until 1938 when it was replaced by the Mark at the exchange rate of 3 Schillings to 2 Marks. This means that Herr Günzburger was a dealer in the 1920’s and/or 1930’s but this writer has never heard of him.

Ex Sotheby’s, 9 March 1989, 519 (part).
