For convenience, the following multiple lots of the Thessalian League coinage are generally arranged by denomination and then chronologically.

Lot of 2 coins.

(855.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Second half 2nd century BC. AR Stater (21mm, 6.25 g, 11h). Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; monogram to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; monogram in inner right field. Not found in the consulted references. Near VF, attractively toned; very rare.

This coin is the stater referenced in the note attached to BCD Thessaly 1376, a bronze issue with the same monogram on the obverse that is here on the reverse. It is likely that this issue was the first of the late Thessalian League.

BMC 1; SNG Ashmolean 3790. VF, toned, small flan crack at 8 o’clock.
