Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; [ΠTO]ΛEMAIOY to left / [Θ]EΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; A-PIΣ/TO-KΛ/C-H above spear and across central field. McClean 4846. VF, lightly toned.


(873.2) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. AR Stater (22mm, 6.24 g, 1h). Androsthenes and Aristokles, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; [E]ΠI ANΔPO/ΣΘENOYΣ to left / [Θ]EΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; to upper right, owl standing right on spear; A-PI/Σ across central field. Not found in the consulted references, but see Klose p. 344, 6th entry for these magistrates, and McClean 4864, possibly of this issue, but with obverse name missing. VF, lightly toned, strike weak on Zeus’s beard.

McClean 4862 corr. (obv. legend). VF, lightly toned.

There are traces indicating that another sigma may have been engraved in the inner right field below KΛ, but was subsequently erased in the die.
