Research Coins: Feature Auction

Triton XV, Lot: 932. Estimate $150.
Sold for $800. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

The large, Sestertius like, Nero bronzes, have been amongst the favourites of this collector. Obtaining them in better than middling condition and without serious flaws, has been a real challenge. The obverses with EIPHNH are much rarer, practically unobtainable; this writer is very pleased to offer in this catalogue one each of the two known obverse dies in nicer condition than most of the few known examples.

THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ Tetrassarion (33mm, 31.70 g, 12h). Laouchos, strategos. NEPΩN KAIΣAP ΘEΣΣAΛΩN, laureate head right, border of dots / ΛAOVXOV ΣT[PA-TH]ΓOV, horse standing right, its reins held in right hand of Thessalia, standing facing, [holding grain ear and poppy in left hand]. Burrer Em. 2, Series 1, Grp. 1, 39 (A13/R29); RPC 1442. Near VF, dark green patina, a few cleaning marks.
