(967.1) THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Tetrassarion (27mm, 11.92 g, 3h). AV ΛO CЄΠTIMI-ON CЄBHPOC, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / KOINON ΘЄCCAΛѠN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm. Burrer, MA-G 8; Rogers 99, fig. 39 var. (obv. legend). Good Fine, green patina, a few minor cleaning marks.


(967.2) THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Triassarion (22mm, 8.33 g, 11h). AV ΛO CЄΠT CЄBHPOC, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / KOIN[O]/N ΘЄCCAΛ/ѠN, Nike, holding wreath in extended right hand, reins in left, driving triga galloping right; Γ (mark of value) below horses. Burrer, MA-G 11 var. (Athena driving triga); Rogers 101. Good Fine, green patina, minor pitting.

[...] ΛOY CЄΠTI CЄBHPOC, laureate and cuirassed bust right / KOINO-N ΘЄCCAΛѠ[N], warrior advancing right, holding spear(?) in his right hand, shield on left arm. Burrer, MA-G 14 (this coin); Rogers 100. Near VF, olive green patina, some red; very rare.

The warrior reverses were few and far between in the Thessalian Provincial series. One wonders what was the reason for their appearance as the do not seem to signal a change in the standard denominations.
