(979.1) THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ Tetrassarion (25mm, 10.13 g, 7h). Struck circa AD 198-211. [AY]TOKPA KAICAP[...], laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / KOINON [ΘЄCCAΛѠN], Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm. Burrer, MA-G 21 var. (obv. legend and bust type); Rogers –. Fine, attractive pale olive green patina; a rare variety.


(979.2) THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ Tetrassarion (27mm, 10.08 g, 7h). Struck circa AD 211-217. [... A]V-P ANTΩNIN, laureate head right / [KOIN]ON [Θ]ЄCCAΛ[ΩN], [Nike, holding wreath in extended right hand, reins in left, driving] quadriga galloping right. Burrer, MA-G 29 (same dies); Rogers –. Near Fine, reverse nearly slick, ragged flan, green patina; very rare denomination/type. Overstruck on uncertain Thessalian Imperial (Septimius Severus?).

[...] AV ANTΩN[INOC], radiate and laureate head right / [KOINON] ΘЄCCA[ΛΩN], Nike, holding wreath in extended right hand, reins in left, driving triga galloping right; Γ (mark of value) below horses. Burrer, MA-G –; Rogers –. Near Fine, brown surfaces, patina worn through on high points. Unpublished with radiate portrait; extremely rare.

MA AV ANTΩNIN-OC, laureate and cuirassed bust right; star in right field / KOINON ΘЄCCAΛѠN, Nike, holding wreath in extended right hand, reins in left hand, driving triga galloping right; Γ (mark of value) below horses. Burrer, MA-G 32; Rogers –. Near VF, green patina, a few cleaning marks.

This coin is a perfect example for the argument against using letter forms as a sole indicator of dating, as both forms of omega, Ω and Ѡ, are present.

(star on obverse). Good Fine, dark green patina; rare.
