ISLANDS off CARIA, Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 360-340 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 15.20 g 1). Head of Helios, three quarters facing turned slightly to the right. Rev. ΡΟΔΙΟΝ Rose with bud to right; to left, facing head of Helios; to right, Α; all within shallow incuse square. Ashton 86 (this coin). Hurter, Klazomenai, pl. VII, O (this coin). Apparently unique. Of very fine style and with a most unusual symbol. Lightly toned. A few very minor scrapes, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Spina Collection, ex Triton V, 15 January 2002, 1452 and Bank Leu 30, 28 April 1982, 185.

The head of Helios on the obverse of this coin is one of the most emotionally human of the entire series. Others are more clearly divine in nature, and some are almost brutal, but this shows both a kindness and a nobility that is divine in the best sense.
