MACEDON, Eion. Circa 460-400 BC. AR Obol (10mm, 0.51 g). Two swans standing right; shell above / Quadripartite incuse square. Peus 384, lot 187 = Peus 376, lot 246 (same dies); otherwise unpublished. EF, old cabinet toning. Excellent metal. Extremely rare variety.

Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 64 (17 May 2012), lot 777.

Obols of this type are not uncommon, but typically have an ivy leaf control mark, sometimes also with the letter H. This is apparently one of only two known with a shell control.
