CENTRAL EUROPE, Noricum (West). 1st century BC. AR Tetradrachm (21mm, 9.23 g, 9h). Head of Apollo to right, wearing a laurel wreath in the form of a diadem / Warrior, holding spear aloft in right hand, on horseback right; ATTA below. Göbl, Noricum, type d, 29–30 (dies 7/1–60); Lanz 142; KMW 809. Good VF, attractively toned. Unusually well centered for issue.

Ex Künker 124 (16 March 2007), lot 7783.

The model for the head on the obverse is taken from both the gold staters of Philip II and the silver of Patraos, which also inspired the reverse of this coin. It is also likely that Roman Republican denarii provided models for the types. It is interesting how the Celtic artist turned Apollo’s wreath into a broad diadem, quite possibly modelled on contemporary gold jewelry.
