First Issue with Ketos
Beginning of the Second Democracy
SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24mm, 17.23 g, 1h). Struck circa 466-460 BC. Charioteer, holding kentron in right hand and reins in both, driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses with open wreath held in both hands; in exergue, ketos right / Diademed head of Arethusa right, wearing loop earring with single pendant and pearl necklace; ΣVR-A-KO-ΣIOИ and four dolphins around. Boehringer 411 (V212/R289); HGC 2, 1309; SNG ANS 128; SNG Lloyd 1308 (same dies); Boston MFA 359 = Warren 314 (same dies); Hirsch 561 (same dies). EF, lightly toned, insignificant faint cleaning marks in field on obverse. Well centered on a broad flan. Rare first issue with ketos and the earliest series of the Second Democracy.
