CARIA, Islands off. Rhodes. Circa 295-280 BC. AR Didrachm (6.39 gm). Radiate head of Helios right / Rose; star and NI to left. Ashton, "Rhodian Coinage and the Colossus," in RN 1988, 18 (A9/P10); SNG von Aulock 2770 (wrongly attributed to Nisyros). Toned VF. Very rare. ($750)

The profile head of Helios is quite different from the usual facing heads and can safely be taken as a representation of the head of the famous Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, which was under construction at the time this coin was struck.
