CNG 94, Lot: 557. Estimate $2000.
Sold for $8000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 650-600 BC. EL Hemistater (15mm, 8.79 g). Samian-Euboeic standard. Plain type. Rough flattened surface / Square incuse punch. Weidauer –; Traité I –; SNG Kayhan –; Boston MFA –; Rosen –; Elektron –; Triton VIII, lot 439 var. (bipartite incuse punch). VF, as made. Extremely rare - perhaps unique.

From the Daniel Koppersmith Collection. Purchased privately from Edward J. Waddell. Ex Münzen und Medaillen 81 (18 September 1995), lot 79.

The obverse may bear a depiction of a roaring lion, as described in the coin’s previous auction appearance. However, this seems unlikely when the piece is compared with the other rare, plain-type issues in the series (see lost 557 and 558).
