THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ Tetrassarion (30mm, 15.18 g, 6h). Megalokles,
strategos. Laureate head right / [ΣTPATHΓOY MEΓ]AΛ[O]KΛE[OYΣ] around laurel wreath with tie ends fluttering upward. Burrer Em. 2, Series 1, 61.1 (A16/R50 – this coin, rev. illustrated on pl. 2); RPC I Supp. S-1426A; BCD Thessaly II 916 (same obv. die). Near VF, green pattina. Very rare – only 6 specimens were known to Burrer at the time of his study (all from the BCD Collection).

As typical for this issue, only a small portion of the reverse legend is visible. It was not until the appearance of BCD Thessaly II 916 that the full legend was able to be reconstructed.
