LOMBARDS, Tuscany. Pseudo-Imperial coinage. AV Tremissis (17mm, 1.44 g, 6h). In the name of Byzantine emperor Maurice Tiberius (582-602). OT N MΛVΛT[...], diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / OVNΛOOITNIIVΛIΛOITIVI, cross potent; ONO. Arslan –; cf. BMC Vandals p. 154, 3; MEC 1, –. Good VF, scratches on reverse. Very rare.

From the collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams, purchased from M. Louis Teller, August 1982.

Like the previous lot, this coin mixes elements of the tremisses of Lombardy and Tuscany: the use of Maurice’s name on the obverse is typical of Lombardy, while the cross potent reverse of the types in the name of Heraclius, with which this coin must be contemporary, is characteristic of Tuscan issues.
