Constantius II. AD 337-361. AV Solidus (20mm, 4.34 g, 6h). Barbarous imitation. D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVC, rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / CONSE-R-VAT AVC, Sol standing slightly right, head left, raising right hand and holding globus in left. Apparently unpublished. VF, areas of weak strike, minor die flaws. An extremely rare and interesting piece.

From the collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams, purchased from Arnold Saslow, July 1982. Reportedly found in Kent, England, May 1982.

An anomalous, presumably British, imitation. This combination of reverse legend and type appears to have been last issued in gold under Probus, and Sol types were altogether abandoned under Constantius’ father, Constantine the Great.
