ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Mercia. Offa. 757-796. AR Penny (17mm, 1.18 g, 6h). Light coinage, portrait type. London mint; Ealhmund, moneyer. Struck circa 779-792/3. OFFA REX mERCIORV, diademed bust right in segmented inner circle / +E AL MV Nd on lobes of a large saltire cross, boss with circle of pellets in each angle. Naismith, Offa 20 = Chick 45A = EMC 2007.0165 = Coin Register 2008, 212 (this coin); SCBI –; BMC –; North –; SCBC 905. Good VF, even grey tone, small scratch on cheek and slightly double struck, otherwise better than usual, the only recorded example.
