CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 340-335 BC. AR Nomos (7.77 gm). Reverse die signed by 'K'. Nude youth on horse prancing left, another youth standing before the horse and embracing it around the neck; above, Nike flying left, crowning youth on horse; I below horse / TARAS, Taras astride dolphin left, holding vase in extended right hand; K (signature) behind. Fischer-Bossert 715 (V266/R559); Vlasto 527 (same dies); SNG ANS -; SNG Lloyd 177 (same dies); HN Italy 892. Toned, good VF. ($750)

The dies signed by K or KAL are perhaps the best designed and executed dies in the entire Tarentine series. This engraver also prepared several other nomoi dies as well as the dies for the very rare gold stater of Taras and Poseidon (Vlasto 1). The same signatures are also found on coins from other cities, including Herakleia and Metapontion and are probably the work of the same artist.
