SASANIAN KINGS of PERSIA. Hormizd I. 272-273 AD. AR Drachm (4.06 gm). Degraded Pahlavi legend, crowned and cuirassed bust right; taurus symbol on near shoulder / Degraded Pahlavi legend, fire altar, Hormazd stands right, raising right hand, Mithra stands left, presenting a wreath. Göbl I/1; cf. Paruck 99; Alram 702; MACW 833 var. (no symbol); De Morgan pg. 667, 32. Nice VF, minor porosity. Very rare, and unpublished with the taurus symbol. ($1000)

Hormizd, a son of Shahpur I, spent the entirety of his short reign campaigning against the Sogdians in the east. The circumstances of his death are unknown.

The crown type on this issue commemorates his investiture by Mithra.
