SASANIAN KINGS of PERSIA. Shahpur II. 309-379 AD. AR Drachm (4.06 gm). Eastern (Harid?) mint. Degraded Pahlavi legend, crowned and cuirassed bust right; uncertain symbol before / Degraded Pahlavi legend, fire altar with attendants and ribbon, bare-headed bust right in flames; Pahlavi legend on central column (unclear). Cf. Göbl, Kushan 1304; Göbl Ia/6a; Paruck -; Alram -; MACW -; De Morgan -. Lightly toned, good VF, light porosity. Unpublished with this symbol. [See color enlargement on plate 10] ($150)

Ex Tkalec & Rauch (14-15 April 1986), lot 199.

The style of the coin clearly places it within the group of drachms that Göbl places at the Harid mint. This symbol does appear in the field behind the crown on two dinars he also placed at Harid (Göbl, Kushan 1301-2). Furthermore, one of these dinars (specimen 1301) has the same unusal style of diadem ties exhibited on the obverse of the present coin.
