ANASTASIUS II, Artemius. 713-715 AD. AV Solidus (4.45 gm). Constantinople mint. Struck 713 AD(?). DN ARTEMIUS AN ASTASIU MUL AN, facing bust with short beard, wearing crown and chlamys, holding globus cruciger and akakia / VICTORIA AVSU, cross potent on three steps; H/CONOB. DOC II 2g var. (obverse legend); MIB III 2 var. (same); SB 1463 var. (same). Superb EF. [See color enlargement on plate 20] ($1250)

From the Christopher Connell Collection. Ex James Fox Collection (Classical Numismatic Group 40, with Numismatica Ars Classica, 4 December 1996), lot 1903; William Herbert Hunt Collection (Sotheby's, 5-6 December 1990), lot 542.

The Hunt cataloguer failed to note the AN at the end of the obverse legend; an unrecorded variety. The acclamation Multus Annus[(Reign) many years] is found in full on the first class of Anastasius' gold, where his name is given only as Anastasius. The present piece might be a transitional issue between his class I and class II, with his full name.
