The Virgin Mary, nimbate, enthroned facing, holding the head of the infant Christ / Isaac, holding cruciform sceptre, and Archangel Michael, holding a sword, standing facing; manus Dei and O between, X M by Michael. S. Bendall and D. Sellwood, in "The Method of Striking Scyphate Coins" in NumChron 1978, pp. 93-104, described the technique of striking a coin on a curved flan by means of rocking a curved die, or even by means of two half dies. In this unusual coin, it is clear that two separate dies (or half dies) were used to strike the obverse, and one of these obverse dies had a previously struck coin adhering.
