CELTIC, Britain. Cantiaci. Dubnovellaunos. Circa 25-10 BC. AE Unit (2.05 gm). Eagle Type. Boar right with long bristles on back, [DV]BNO between two lines below / Eagle standing. Hobbs 2509; Van Arsdell 180; SCBC 183. VF/Fine. Very rare. ($250)

Ex A.H.Baldwin.

A bronze of Cunobelin, Van Arsdell 2105, has a very similar reverse. As Van Arsdell says, the “ultimate source of image may be a gem, one from Aquilia is similar, or a paste intaglio, two from Berlin also similar.” Once again, we see links between the bronze coins of Dubnovellaunos and the bronze coins of Cunobelin. This specimen boldly shows a vertical bar below the boar, which is presumably the trunk of an overhanging tree.
