ANTIQUITY. PREHISTORIC ERA. Balkans, Danube River Cultures. Gold fertility amulet. Neolithic Period, circa 3rd millennium BC. Height: 30mm; weight: 2.22 gm. A schematic female figure, cut from a flat gold plate, outlined in dots, with two pierced holes at the breasts. Fine condition, a few scuff marks. ($1000)

Recent discoveries have shown that the Danube river basin was the site of the earliest gold working in Europe, pre-dating 3000 BC. Thus, this fertility goddess follows a tradition dating to the earliest human occupation of Europe.
