INDIA, Princely States. Jhalawar. In the name of Queen Victoria. 1837-1901. AR Nazarana Rupee (11.25 gm). Dated regnal year 60(?) (1897 AD). Legend with title / Legend with "tree", regnal year and branch. Cf. KM 6c (date unrecorded). Toned EF. ($200)

Ex Ken Wiggins Collection (Baldwin's 25 (8 May 2001), lot 237 (part of).

None of the coins of Jhalawar bear the name of the local ruler; they were struck in the name of either the Mughal emperor or, after 1857, Queen Victoria as empress of India. Most coins of Victoria have a frozen VS date of 1915, with regnal years starting from 1857 and continuing to year 40 (1897), the year the British took over direct control of the state. This coin presents a problem, as the date reads "G•" or Persian "60". This date would have to be reckoned in Victoria's years as queen, starting in 1837. It is equivalent to the last known year of Jhalawar's coinage, and may represent the last issue of the state.
