PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter, as Satrap. 323-305 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.60 gm). Alexandria mint. Struck in the name of Alexander III of Macedon, circa 310-305 BC. Diademed head of Alexander right, wearing elephant's skin headdress / Athena Alkidemos advancing right, brandishing spear and holding shield; helmet, monogram, and eagle in right field. Svoronos 162; Jenkins, Early, Group e; SNG Copenhagen 29. Superb EF, exceptional flan and well struck, small "x" graffito behind Athena. Overstruck on an Alexander III tetradrachm; a trace of Zeus' outstretched arm and eagle are visible on the reverse. ($1500)
