SWEDEN. Plate Money. Karl XII. 1697-1718. Gun Metal 2 Daler (18cm x 18cm). Stockholm mint. Dated 1716. Center stamp 2 D:S:M with three crowns in circle, four round corner stamps with crown. Center stamp incomplete. Tingström, Plate pg. 326, stamps D and 1; pg. 288, B and 1; KM PM48. VF, brown patina, lacquered. Crudely cast, with many voids in the plate. Not sea salvage. ($500)

As early as 1710 the suggestion had been broached that obsolete and damaged bronze cannon be re-cast as plate money. Pieces of 1 and 2 Dalers were struck 1714-1716, but did not meet with general approval, being accepted in the markets at a one-third discount under the stated value.
