MACEDON, Mende. Circa 480 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.96 gm). M-I-NDAION, ass advancing right, ivy wreath around midriff; bird (starling) standing left on ass's rump, pecking for insects / Mill-sail incuse square. Noe, Mende 12 (same dies; this coin referenced on pg. 10); AMNG III 13 (this coin); SNG ANS 296 (same dies). Good VF, toned, scattered spots of light encrustation. Extremely rare; one of only five known to Noe with the wreath around the ass's midriff. ($5000)
