SATRAPS of CARIA. Pixodaros. 340-334 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.10 gm, 12h). Head of Apollo facing slightly right, wearing laurel wreath / PIXODAROU, Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding labrys and lotus-tipped sceptre; small E between feet and sceptre. Pixodarus pg. 223, 9 (A2/P3); Traité -; BMC Caria -; SNG Copenhagen -; SNG von Aulock 8047 (same dies); SNG Kayhan -. EF, toned, some minor roughness on the reverse. Very rare. ($1500)

From the Ronald Cohen Collection.

The obverse die on this coin was also used to strike tetradrachms in the name of Hidrieus. The die sharing and the carry-over from Hiedreius' issues of the small E on the reverse suggest that Pixodaros' tetradrachms were struck early in his reign.
