LEO III, the "Isaurian", with Constantine V. 717-741 AD. AV Solidus (4.00 gm, 4h). Naples mint. Struck 737-741 AD. D LE ON P, facing bust of Leo, with short beard, wearing crown and chlamys, holding globus cruciger and akakia; L in right field / D CO NST, similiar bust of Constantine, but beardless; K in right field. DOC III 60; Ricotti-Prina 54; SB 1537C. EF for type, slightly double strike. Extremely rare Italian solidus. ($3000)

From the Malcolm W. Heckman Collection.

The hapless engraver originally cut D CO NST and K on the obverse with portrait of Leo, and then had to re-engrave the legend to cover his blunder.
