HONORIUS. 393-423 AD. AV Tremissis (15mm, 1.43 gm, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck 393-395 AD. DN HONORI-VS P F AVG, small pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, Victory advancing right, looking left, holding wreath and globus with detached cross; CONOB. RIC X 20 var. (bust size); Depeyrot 50/4 var. (same); DOCLR 753 var. (same). Good VF, a few scratches. A variety unrecognized in the references.
The earliest gold issues of the sons of Theodosius I used very small, child-like portraits. See the 383-386 solidi of Arcadius (DOCLR 1-4) and a 393-395 solidus of Honorius (DOCLR 691). It appears that no one has recognized a tremissis of Honorius from his earliest period, as junior augustus before the death of his father in 395.
