THRACE. Perinthus. Caracalla. 198-217 AD. Æ Medallion (42mm, 39.53 gm, 7h). Struck 215 AD. Laureate and cuirassed bust right, holding spear over shoulder; aegis on breastplate / Nonostyle and octastyle temples, each set on three-tiered base, seen in perspective, vis-à-vis; pair of agonistic crowns above. Schönert-Geiss, Perinthus 601; Mouchmov 4541; BMC Thrace 43; cf. SNG Copenhagen 746; Varbanov 3887. Near EF, black, green and light brick-red patina, minor smoothing in fields. An artistically impressive composition. ($5000)

In 216 AD, Perinthus hosted the combined Pythian-Actian Games in Caracalla's honor, as he made his way east to confront the Persians.
