IONIA, Smyrna. Mid-late 2nd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.68 g, 12h). Hermippos, son of Sipylos, magistrate. Turreted head of Tyche right / Lion right; ERMIPPOS/SIPULOU in two lines below; all within wreath. Milne, Silver, 27; SNG Copenhagen 1119-1120 var. (magistrate); Weber 6115 (same obv. die). Good VF, toned. Very rare. ($3000)

The dating of this coin derives from Milne's detailed study and arrangement of this series ("The Autonomous Coinage of Smyrna, " NumChron 1927, pp. 78-82), based on its relation to a series of cistophori for Smyrna dated between 133-126 BC.
