[Antiquities] GREEK. Gold and garnet necklace. 4th century BC. A 28cm string of beads and pendants, consisting of hollow gold ribbed "melon" beads and irregular polished beads of garnets. Spaced along the necklace are six sheet gold acanthus pendants and three gold and garnet drop pendants. The Greek for "garnet" and "pomegranate" come from the same root, and the polished garnet beads do resemble pomegranate seeds. The melon beads are slightly different, and may have been assembled from different sources, and one of the "garnets" is actually glass and probably later. Nevertheless, the assembly is a choice example of early Greek jewelry. Choice and rare. ($1500)
