[Antiquities] ROMAN. Bronze figurine of Hercules. 1st-2nd century AD. Height 23mm. A half length bust of Hercules, flat back but with head modelled in the round. Nude bust with lion skin draped over shoulder, the face being an older depiction of the hero, with full beard and downcast gaze. Very finely incised detail to head and bust. Perhaps a small fibula, a short stub with trace of a hinge on back. The portrait owes inspiration to the monumental works of the 2nd century BC Greek sculptor Lysippos, such as the Weary Hercules and the Farnese Hercules. Glossy dark green, almost black patina with light green accents. A miniature masterpiece. ($300)
