BOIOTIA, Thebes. Circa 395-338 BC. AR Obol (0.73 g). Theot(i)-, magistrate. Struck circa 363-348 or circa 379 BC. Boiotian shield, [club left across upper half] / Youthful head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress; QE downward on upper right; all within incuse concave circle. Cf. Head, Boeotia p. 69. Good Fine, surface deposits. Very rare variety. ($150)

All published specimens of this type have the legend to the lower right and are of a later fabric and style (see next lot); this is an exception and from the more rigid style and the earlier fabric it could easily be a rare early obol issue of QE-OG, the magistrate who issued the fine style staters upon the resumption of the coinage following the liberation of the Cadmeia (see above, lots 502 and 503).
