TRACHONITIS, Panias. Diva Poppaea and Diva Claudia. Died AD 65 and AD 63. Æ 20mm (5.31 g). Struck under Nero, circa AD 65. Distyle temple with seated figure of Poppaea / DIVA CLAVD NER F, hexastyle temple with figure of Nero. RPC I 4846; SNG ANS 858. Fine, rough brown surfaces.

From the Garth Drewry Collection. Ex C.O.I.N. )15-19 June 1976), lot 315; Charles Ruby Collection, pt. 2 (Superior, 17-22 June 1974), lot 571.

The only coin issued in the name of Claudia, Nero's daughter, who died in infancy in AD 63. Poppaea, her mother, was kicked to death by Nero two years later. Site finds support an attribution to Panias (modern Banias), and Agrippa II re-named the city Neronias in AD 61, an attempt to curry imperial favor that did not outlast Nero himself.
