CELTIC, Britain. Atrebates & Regni. Uninscribed. Circa 75-45 BC. AV Quarter Stater (1.18 g, 3h). Atrebatic abstract type, circa 55-45 BC. Abstract head of Apollo right; spike with central pellet and single pellet-in-annulet at end / Celticized horse right with triple-tail; dahlia above, cog wheel below, pellets-in-annulets around. Van Arsdell 226-1 var. (obverse details); SCBC 48. Good VF.

From the Andrew Wayne Collection. Ex Dix, Noonan, Webb 51 (4 October 2001), lot 121.

Unlike the standard type of Van Arsdell 226-1, this particular specimen exhibits a spike with different ornaments, and the four-pronged device to the lower right lacks internal hash marks. The Celtic Coin Index records two other examples which appear to have been struck from the same dies as this coin: CCI 780010 (Chichester District Museum) and CCI 840269 (Zurich).
