[Oil lamps] ROMAN. Italy. Pottery oil lamp. Circa 1st century AD. Length 9.5cm. Mold-formed with central motif of a winged Eros as hunter, wearing boots and cape, bearing a pole with a hind tied to it. Base marked L.MVN.SVC. Fill hole on discus, spout with volutes, no handle. Cream colored clay with irregularly applied brown and red slip. Cf. Djuric, Anawati Collection 125 for potter. Choice condition, slip worn.

From the Dr. Robert B. Beckett Collection.

Djuric assigns this lamp to the North African group, while noting that most authorities prefer to place most, if not all, of the signing potters’ workshops in Italy.
