Anonymous issues. 1st-3rd centuries AD. Æ Tessera (19mm, 5.53 g, 4h). Fly-whisk / Dolobra. Cf. Gorny & Mosch 122 (10 March 2003), lot 2413, otherwise unpublished. Dark green-brown patina, edge splits, minor roughness, off center. Fine.

From the Aleph Collection. Ex Ibercoin Online Auction 32 (18 December 2019), lot 133.

The dolobra depicted on this tessera was a sort of pickax or ax that was commonly used by the Roman army as an entrenching tool, but also served as a priestly implement. This token is reminiscent in fabric to those found in Spain, and may in fact be from that region.

Closing Date and Time: 1 November 2023 at 12:40:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
