CAROLINGIANS. Charles le Chauve (the Bald). As Charles II, King of West Francia, 840-87712:18:23 PM. AR Denier (21mm, 1.66 g, 6h). Class I Cross and Temple type. Parisii (Paris) mint. Struck 840-864. + CΛRLVS RE+ FR, cross pattée / + PΛRISII CIVITAS, temple façade. Coupland, Early 19; Depeyrot 762; M&G 827; MEC 1, 843. Lightly toned, some deposits, a few marks. VF.

From the Simon Coupland Collection.

The temple coinage struck at Paris is distinguished by the absence of pellets around the obverse cross, which is unique among West Frankish mints. The legends are neatly cut, and the obverse inscription is generally arranged so that the letter X of the title REXFR is aligned with the third arm of the central cross. The temple is broad, with a low roof and capitals on the columns, and the bottom step usually projects beyond the one above. It was probably replaced by the type with the mint name in field in the 850s. [S. Coupland]
